Gretchen Trujillo is the point of view of the novel and the best friend of Zoe Boutin Perry. Zoe is favored by the Obin, a race of sentient spider-giraffes. Gretchen was appointed as the Colonial Union ambassador to the Obin due to her connection with Zoe.
